What’s the definition of a “Young Person” – It is someone under the age of 18 as defined by the HSE.
Responsibilities when employing a young person Whether it’s for work, work experience or as an apprentice, the same health, safety & welfare responsibilities apply although a suitable and sufficient risk assessment specific to their task and individual must be completed.
Where to obtain guidance. Guidance can be found at Health and Safety at Work Act etc. 1974, regulation 19 Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, which specifies your duties to protect them from any risks to their health or safety from a lack of experience, absence of awareness of existing or potential risks or immaturity.
Risk Assessments should be bespoke to the young person including any specific hazards.
